I am still so touched by your pictures of Fred and Hank. They really do tell a story. Is Fred dominant to Hank? We might be witnessing a changing of the guard since Hanks is the younger, more physically fit dog - the way Fred is the one not making eye contact. It's only mother nature doing her thing. They are precious.

Oh, and your pictures of Yosemite are pretty cool too.

Having tried both on numerous occasions, count me in as a Five Guys supporter. After being raised on Milo Burgers (they haven't made it quite out of Alabama yet - www.miloshamburgers.com), I've come to appreciate the fact that a good burger is a greasy burger. Any argument that counts lack of grease as a positive when judging a burger loses me. And I don't think the free peanuts at Five Guys can be discounted in these economic times... Five thumbs up for Five Guys.

My 15-year-old son, Max, had his first Five Guys burger about 15 minutes ago. Loved it. Left the fries in the bag, though ("vinegar?" he asked, eyebrows up.) Now we just have to fly to LA to get him an In-and-Out so he can weigh in. And can I ask a question as a Lab owner dreading another DC summer: Why do Fred and Hank never pant?

Great photos. The West is Best! Just sayin ' ...

Having never experiences Five Guys, In and Out Burger, Shoney's or even the last fellow's Milo Burgers, I feel like sulking in the corner myself...

Oh, and that Fred photo is my seldom-changed screensaver, an honor previously reserved only for my own dog Hazel. Joan, your photos really capture the spirit and character of your subjects. I'm so impressed!

Like commenter Joan, I found the pictures of Fred and Hank post-squabble to be very affecting. I'm glad that the boys seem to have made peace with each other.

On the Five Guys v. In-n-Out debate, I'm kind of torn. I prefer my burgers medium rare, which is not really an option at either place, so I find myself slightly preferring the In-n-Out burger. Because the patties are thinner, the synergy between them and the "animal style" condiments is very pleasing to my palate. I really like their chocolate shakes too. I think that a perfect meal for me would be an In-n-Out Double Double - "animal style" -chocolate shake, and Five Guys fries.

Church and gas station in the same building: There's one in Rosslyn (nee Arlington), VA, just down the street from the old WashingtonPost.com world HQ. Gas station is at street level, natch, with the church above (that much closer to heaven?). I believe the church owns the building, and that there was a big flap a couple years ago when the church tried to evict the gas station in favor of a higher-paying tenant: a different gas station.

Count my vote for INO -- burger aside, the sticker packs keep my kids busy for hours.

I love the Fred and Hank pictures...and the photos of Yosemite.

As for burgers...I've never been to either place, and I don't think they have either of them in Michigan, either. Heck, we're just now starting to get Sonic. We're in the dark ages.

Best burger, though, hands-down, is one they used to make at a bar near my house. Tied with that would be burgers made at another bar in my home town. Sensing a theme? Funny part is that I don't frequent bars. I usually have to call ahead and pick it up when it's ready because smoke + asthma do not mix.

I haven't been to INO, but the only fries I like better than Five Guys are from Thrasher's in Ocean City, MD. And yes, boys and girls, I eat them with vinegar. Knowing where the potatoes are from each day is icing on the cake. So unless the INO burgers are magical, I'll have to stick with Five Guys.

First of all, In-n-Out are the gods of the fast food burger world. Hands down.

Secondly, in Bakersfield CA is a gas station/car wash/Chinese food place. (My husband and I can't agree whether it is a Chevron or a Mobil station. And going 2000 miles west to settle a minor squabble just doesn't seem worth it.)

Love the blog. But I am trying very hard to keep my beagle from hearing about it. I can just hear her arooooo now - "Road trip!"

Mark Potts beat me to it. I was going to point out the "Our Lady of Exxon" in Rosslyn. On the burger wars front, I love and adore In-N-Out, but I have never had this Five Guys of which you speak. Did it come to D.C. recently? I don't remember it from when I lived there. I do love my fries with vinegar, so I might have to suggest that INO start stocking the malt. On a related note, does anybody still put Old Bay on their fries?

Being a Californian I am going to have to go with In-n-Out. Although we have a new place in town called The Habit (that also originated in Southern California) that is pretty good. I had never even heard of Five Guys until reading this blog.

In and Out Burger by a mile for many reason listed above.

And it wasn't quite the same business like others listed but being right next door to each other in a strip mall made one queasy:

Spay and Neuter Clinic next to a deli. The day we were there it advertised a meatball sub special (really)... we passed...
